Crossplay, cross-progression and linked accounts

Three similar terms, three different promises. Knowing which one a game offers tells you whether your friends, your unlocks and your purchases come with you.

The three terms

  • Crossplay: players on different platforms can play in the same match.
  • Cross-progression: your level and unlocks follow your account from one platform to another.
  • Cross-save: an entire save, not just unlocks, carries across. Warframe and Minecraft Bedrock work this way.

How our ten games handle it

  • Fortnite: crossplay and shared progression through your Epic account.
  • Minecraft: Bedrock Edition plays across consoles, PC and phones. Java Edition is PC only.
  • Warframe: crossplay and cross-save across PC, consoles and mobile.
  • VALORANT: PC and console use separate queues. Your Riot account links them.
  • Overwatch and Marvel Rivals: crossplay, with progression tied to your publisher account.
  • Helldivers 2: crossplay between PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
  • Apex Legends: crossplay, with progression tied to your EA account.
  • Final Fantasy XIV and Path of Exile 2: shared worlds across platforms, linked through your Square Enix or Grinding Gear account.

What usually doesn't transfer

Premium currency is often tied to the platform where you bought it, even when unlocks transfer. Buy currency on the platform you play on most, and check the publisher's help pages before buying on a console you use only now and then.

Linking accounts safely

Link accounts only from the publisher's official website or from inside the game. Before linking, turn on two-step sign-in on both accounts. Our account-security notes list where to find it.
