What it is
The battle royale is still the centrepiece: a hundred players, one island and a closing storm. But Fortnite now hosts far more than that. Zero Build removes construction entirely. Reload offers short matches with respawns. LEGO Fortnite is a survival-crafting game, Fortnite Festival is a rhythm game and Rocket Racing is an arcade racer. Thousands of player-made islands run on Epic's creator tools.
The first evening
Start in Zero Build. Traditional building mechanics take real practice, and most new players struggle against people who've spent years on them. Zero Build lets you learn the map, the weapons and the storm first. Queue with friends if you can: squads are more forgiving, and teammates can revive you. Play time can disappear quickly here, so parental controls are worth setting up for younger players. Our spending-limits guide covers Epic's settings.
What you'll pay for
- V-Bucks buy everything. The shop shows each item's V-Buck price clearly, and there are no mystery purchases. Epic removed paid random items from the game years ago.
- The battle pass costs V-Bucks and pays some back as you level it, so regular players can often buy the next season's pass with what they earn.
- Fortnite Crew is a monthly subscription that bundles the pass, a V-Buck allowance and an exclusive outfit.
- The Item Shop rotates daily. This is the main mark against it. Rotation creates urgency, and "it might not come back" is a sales tactic.
Epic lets you undo some cosmetic purchases shortly after buying and gives each account a small number of return requests. Our refunds guide explains how.
Who it suits
Almost everyone at some point, especially friend groups who like switching between modes in one evening. It suits you less if you want one stable game that stays the same, because Fortnite reinvents itself every season.
