How they play
Apex Legends is about movement and teamwork. Slide down a hill, climb a wall, rotate with your squad and trust the ping system to do the talking. Fights are fast, and experienced players punish every error. Fortnite is broader. The battle royale is only one mode among many, and Zero Build removes the construction skill that used to divide new players from veterans.
Which is kinder to newcomers?
Fortnite, clearly. Zero Build, bot-filled early matches and a huge range of other modes mean a new player always has something they can enjoy. Apex's firing range and bot matches help, but its public matches ask more of you from the first drop.
How they sell
This is where they differ most for our purposes. Fortnite sells every item by name for a clearly stated V-Buck price, and its pass returns some currency to regular players. Its weakness is the daily rotating shop, which creates urgency. Apex still sells Apex Packs with random contents alongside named items, which is why it has the lower price-honesty score of the two.
Our pick
Fortnite for most people, especially friend groups and younger players. Apex Legends if what you want is the best-feeling squad shooter around and you're happy to ignore the packs.
