What it is
From the studio behind Titanfall, Apex Legends drops squads of three into a shrinking arena. Each legend brings a small kit of abilities, such as scans, heals, zip lines and portals. The game's biggest contribution to the genre is its ping system: one button marks enemies, loot and destinations, so squads can coordinate without saying a word. Sliding, climbing and rotating between fights feels superb.
A quick note on our name: Respawn Rated has no connection to Respawn Entertainment. "Respawn" is simply the word for coming back into a game.
The first evening
Play the firing range and a few rounds against bots first. Then try duos or trios with a friend if you can. Pick a legend with a simple kit (Bangalore and Lifeline are good starts) and focus on staying with your team. The skill ceiling is high, and your first matches against experienced squads will be short. That's normal.
What you'll pay for
- Legends can be unlocked through play, and new ones join the free path.
- The battle pass each season sells cosmetics and some currency.
- Apex Packs contain random cosmetics. You earn them by levelling, and you can also buy them. EA lists what a pack can contain, and duplicates convert to crafting metals. This is why Apex has our lowest price-honesty mark: paying for a random result is the pattern we'd most like games to drop.
- Event collections sell limited cosmetics for a short time. Look at the whole cost before you start collecting.

Who it suits
Players who love movement and squad play and will put in the practice. It suits you less if you're easily frustrated by losing fights quickly, or if random paid items bother you on principle.
