What it is
Two teams of five take turns attacking and defending bomb sites. Each round you buy weapons with in-match funds, and each agent has a small kit of abilities like smokes, flashes and scouting tools. The shooting is precise: heads die fast, and moving while firing is inaccurate. It's closer to Counter-Strike than to a hero shooter, with abilities adding a layer of planning on top.
The first evening
Play the tutorial, then Swiftplay, which is shorter than a full match, before touching competitive. Pick one agent from the starter set and stick with them for a while. Knowing one kit well beats knowing six badly. Solo queue can be unforgiving, and voice chat has good and bad nights. Mute early if you need to and use pings. Riot's report tools are there if things go wrong.
On PC, Riot's Vanguard anti-cheat runs at kernel level and starts with Windows. It's effective, but some players don't want that level of access on their machine, and that's a fair concern. Console players on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S have their own queues.

Who it suits
Players who love improving: learning maps, lineups and crosshair placement, round after round. It's less suited to anyone who wants easy-going fun after work. Every round counts, and that tension is either the appeal or the problem.
