How they play
Overwatch is tighter and more deliberate. Five players, strict roles and maps built around holding and taking space. Marvel Rivals is louder: six a side, maps you can partly destroy, and team-up abilities between specific heroes. Rivals gets you into the action faster. Overwatch gives more back the longer you play it.
Heroes and access
Both give every hero to every player free, which is how it should be. Overwatch's February 2026 relaunch added a wave of new heroes and a year-long story. Rivals has passed fifty heroes and adds more each season.
How they sell
Rivals has the better pass: once bought, it never expires. Overwatch has the simpler shop: one main currency, plus Mythic Prisms for top-tier skins. Rivals' three currencies make real costs harder to judge. Neither sells paid random items.
Our pick
Overwatch if you want depth and a role to master. Marvel Rivals if you want a big roster of familiar heroes and a pass you can finish whenever you like.
